The Mars Girls Soccer team won the 3A state championship Saturday with a 1-0 victory over defending state champion Villa Joseph Marie at Hersheypark Stadium. Taylor Hamlett scored the game’s only goal in the first half for the Planets. Courtney Lisman earned the shutout in goal for Mars, who won their first state title since winning the 2A championship in 2011.
The North Catholic Girls Volleyball team won their first 2A state championship with a come-from-behind 3-2 match victory over North Penn-Liberty. North Catholic fell behind 2-0 before dominating the final three sets.
North Allegheny defeated Bishop Shanahan 3-2 to capture the 4A championship for the third consecutive year.
Sharon defeated Grove City 33-21 to win the District-10 3-A championship Saturday at Slippery Rock University’s Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. It was not an easy night for Sharon, who arrived at the stadium prior to game time with the wrong uniforms.
WPIAL Championship games at Heinz Field:
–Central Catholic defeated Pine-Richland 10-7 to win the 6A championship.
–Thomas Jefferson routed Belle Vernon 41-7 to win the 4A title.
–Central Valley defeated Aliquippa 13-12 in overtime when the ‘Quips were stopped on what would have been a game-winning two-point conversion in the extra frame.
–Clairton defeated Sto-Rox 41-19 in the 1A title game.
