The Mars Area School District has received a grant to help with an additional resource for their special education program.
The $22,000 will be used to convert a high school classroom into a mock apartment to help students work on their life skills. School officials say the realistic space will help high school special education students practice activities like cleaning, preparing meals, paying bills and time management…which will better prepare them to live independently after graduation.
The Mars School District has been under fire this year for their special education programming, which many parents argue is inadequate. The district recently received an audit from the state about deficiencies in their programs. Mars officials say they have steps in place to improve their offerings.
