The Mars Area School District will now have minimum participation requirements for their athletic activities.
The school board approved the requirements during a meeting Tuesday, which were put together by district administrators including Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley and the district’s Athletic Director.
Shipley said the minimums were set very low because the goal is to right-size coaching staffs and not to attempt to eliminate as many teams as possible. If a sport was not run a particular year due to a lower than minimum student interest, that sport could return the following year if interest returned above the minimum.
The requirements for each sport will be posted to the district’s website by next week.
