The Mars Area School District is moving ahead with plans to eliminate a music teacher position over the objections of some parents, students and community members.
With the retirement of longtime instructor Mike Holupka, Superintendent Dr. Wes Shipley recommended the position be absorbed into the schedule of other faculty in the music department.
About 12 concerned individuals addressed the school board during a meeting Tuesday night about the decision not to fill the position and the impact they believe it would have on a growing music program at Mars.
School administrators and board members maintain that no academic programs will be lost or activities affected by this change with a new faculty member instructing seventh grade band, and group instrumental lessons continuing as before.
The board, on Tuesday, also approved the hiring of David Soose to the supplemental position of marching band director. Soose is not a district employee but has been involved with the band program for years and will carry the program forward with the help of two assistants.
