The man accused of shooting and killing a Westmoreland County police officer over the weekend is now in custody.
State police had been looking for Rahmael Sal Holt since Friday night. He was apprehended early Tuesday morning without incident at a home in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood.
Holt’s mother and two others were also arrested for hindering Holt’s apprehension.
Holt is accused of shooting New Kensington police officer Brian Shaw during a routine traffic stop in New Kensington. Holt was not driving but fled from the vehicle on foot, prompting a chase. Sometime during the pursuit, shots were fired and Shaw was struck in the chest. He was wearing a bulletproof vest, but he later died from his injuries.
Police have arrested the driver of the vehicle that did not stop for police. Tavon Harper remains in jail.
Shaw was a Slippery Rock University graduate and former kicker for the SRU football team. He’s the second member of the 2011 SRU championship football team to be murdered. Middle linebacker Zach Sheridan was shot and killed in Pittsburgh in 2013.
