An Allegheny County man is accused of assaulting a woman at a Butler County apartment building and then leaving his toddler home alone.
Ewari Ellis, 34, of Coraopolis is in the Butler County Prison facing charges of assault, endangering the welfare of a child and theft.
According to Butler Township Police, the incident started early Monday morning at the Old Plank Estates apartment complex in Butler. A woman called police and alleged that Ellis had assaulted her in several ways, including by “flicking a cigarette in her face, punching and choking her,” according to court documents.
She told police she was able to jump out of a window and escape to a nearby apartment to call police, but that her 15-month old child was still inside with Ellis, who is the child’s father.
When police arrived, they found that Ellis had left the apartment, but left his baby behind. Officers allege he left the stove on with a greasy paper towel nearby while the toddler was still inside “causing a potentially dangerous situation,” according to police. Police say the 15-month old was unharmed.
Officers found Ellis walking on Litman Road. He was arrested and taken to jail.
