Dr. Lumley’s resignation comes amid calls for him to step down after high levels of lead and E.Coli were found in the water at Summit Township Elementary School.
Testing done in August by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection showed high levels of lead in the drinking water at Summit Elementary, but parents weren’t notified until last month.
After the test results were revealed, Summit Elementary was closed for two days as the district brought in temporary sinks and bottled water. But then subsequent tests revealed E.Coli in the raw well water coming into the school, which prompted the district to close the school for the majority of last week.
Following the initial public release of the test results in January, parent Missie Carbin started a change.org petition calling for Dr. Lumley’s resignation to “allow us (parents) to begin the process of rebuilding trust in the Butler Area School District.”
The petition had over 900 signatures as of Sunday.
