A man involved with the fire service in Butler County for four decades has hung up his hose.
Butler Township Fire Marshal Larry Christy retired Thursday. Christy was fire marshal in Butler Township for 10 years. Before that, he worked for the Butler City Fire Department for 30.
“I’m not going to miss getting calls at 2 a.m. when it’s 10 below zero,” Christy said with a laugh. “But, of course, I’m going to miss the guys and gals I’ve worked with.”
During his time in Butler Township, a lot changed in terms of landscape with the addition of several commercial properties. Christy says it was educational and interesting to see first-hand new sprinkler and fire alarm systems going into places like the new Greenwood and Butler Crossing plazas, and at Butler Memorial Hospital’s new tower.
“The hospital tower project was a huge project. I got to see and inspect all of these state-of-the-art systems going in,” he said.
In Butler Township, Lt. Chris Watalla, from the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department, will replace Christy as fire marshal. Christy is confident he’ll do a great job.
“He’s a seasoned inspector and investigator,” he said.
Christy plans to stay local and enjoy time with family.
