The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-2 Wednesday. Pirate starter Jeff Locke allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and lost his fifth game of the season. This, after he allowed 11 earned runs in his last start in Colorado. Locke failed to get an out in the fifth inning before leaving the game. Reliever Rob Scahill allowed another three runs in two innings of relief. First baseman Jon Jaso had three of the Pirates five hits.
The Bucs and Mets meet for the final time this season in New York tonight. First pitch is 7:10pm. Juan Nicasio will start for the Pirates. Bartolo Colon will start for the Mets. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:45pm.
Starling Marte left the game in the fifth inning as well after diving for a ball that then hit him in the cheek.
Manager Clint Hurdle moved Andrew McCutchen into the third in the batting line-up. McCutchen has been batting second this season, but is off to the worst batting average of his career. Gregory Polanco moved to second in the order last night.
The Pirates head to Chicago for a three-game series beginning tomorrow afternoon.
The Pirates Wednesday announced they have signed infielder Will Craig, the 22nd overall selection in the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft. The deal is worth just over $2.25 million. He will begin his professional career at Single-A West Virginia.
Craig, 21, hit .379 with 16 doubles, 16 home runs and 66 RBIs in 55 games for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons this season. He is one of five finalists for the 2016 ” Dick Howser Trophy”, awarded annually to collegiate baseball’s top player.
