There is still time to sign up for a local informational event regarding small games of chance, offered as part of Gambling Awareness Month.
Lena Southworth, a program supervisor with the Center for Community Resources in Butler, said the workshop will be on Monday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the staff development center.
“We are hosting so that people who have small games of chance licenses can come and understand the rules and regulations behind having the license,” she said. Many organizations- including clubs and nonprofits- use small games of chance for fundraisers.
Registration is required and those interested should contact CCR for more information.
There are several activities that are designated as small games of chance: pull-tab games, punchboards, raffles, daily and weekly drawings, 50-5o drawings and pools. Any organization using any of these games to raise money will need a small games of chance license.
According to Southworth, the data received from a recent survey done of residents of the Butler County community has revealed that problem gambling is an issue that hits close to home, with 40 percent of adults ages 25 to 64 know someone who they think may have a gambling problem and 15 percent of youth under the age of 18 know someone who they think also might have a gambling problem.
“Those numbers are staggering for such a small community,” she said.
Those interested in getting help with this often hidden addiction are encouraged to contact the Pennsylvania Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-877-565-2112.
