A Butler County woman has been sentenced after pleading guilty to illegally obtaining and disclosing the health information of more than 100 patients.
Linda Kalina, 62, of Butler was sentenced Tuesday to one year in jail followed by three years of supervised release.
Prosecutors allege Kalina violated HIPAA when she accessed the individual health information of 111 UPMC patients while working as a patient information coordinator in 2016 and 2017. Many of these people were Kalina’s coworkers, former classmates and relatives, according to prosecutors.
Kalina then worked for Allegheny Health Network where she allegedly again improperly accessed individual health information, according to officials.
In August 2017, Kalina is accused of disclosing personal health information related to two individuals “with the intent to cause them embarrassment and mental distress,” according to prosecutors.
United State District Judge Arthur Schwab imposed Kalina with the maximum sentence, saying her conduct was the “most egregious of its kind.”
