A local woman is making an effort to assist communities in Louisiana, specifically school children, that have been devastated by recent flooding.
“I was on Facebook browsing through some of the posts about Louisiana and I came across this one lady who is doing animal rescue and I thought, there’s got to be something I can do,” Lisa Lema said. “Children in Louisiana started school four days before the flood and they lost everything. I said ‘why don’t I try to see if I can get the donations and we’ll get them down there somehow?’”
The Portersville resident decided to devote her free time to collecting items and figuring out a way to get them where they are needed.
Items needed for kids in that area include backpacks, notebooks, pencils, pens, scissors, crayons and even calculators. With many area students back in school or about to be, Lema says this would be a great time to purchase those kinds of supplies at a discount.
As of now, the only place Lema is collecting these items is Cal’s General Store in Portersville but she is looking for other businesses to allow her to put up collection boxes.
