A group of young local students are pitching-in with the effort to collect stockings for cancer patients in our area.
The Hang Tough Project provides the stockings as gifts to individuals going through treatments, which can sometimes take hours. The items in the stockings can help patients pass the time, and bring patients a little joy during this time of year. Last year, over 1,000 stockings were delivered to patients in Butler County.
Executive Director of Penn Christian Academy Craig Carnahan says it was the idea of some pre-school teachers to get Penn Christian students involved.
“It’s something that even 3-and-4-year-olds can do to serve the community, especially around this time of year,” Carnahan said in an interview.
He says giving back to the community has long been an important lesson for the students at Penn Christian Academy.
“Every year, a variety of classrooms around the school- including the pre-school classrooms- will usually do some sort of an outreach project,” he said. “This is done instead of doing a classroom gift exchange between students. They will choose to donate items to a local food bank or some other local outreach project.”
The Butler Radio Network joined with Schneider’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning to help facilities this collection a few years ago. Several local businesses have also jumped on board and serve as a drop-off for people wanting to donate. More information is available here.
Stockings will be collected through Friday, Nov. 30.
