We’ve entered the sixth month without a state budget but some lawmakers believe the end is in sight.
State Representative Brian Ellis of Butler spoke to Dave Malarkey during Wednesday’s It’s Your Turn program.
“The time has come,” Ellis said. “A lot of folks have gone through a lot of difficulties without a budget. We’re ironing out some comprised language on several different issues throughout the next six or seven days and hopefully we can get everything done as fast as possible.”
Among the issues on the table include education funding, expanding the sales tax base and reforming public pensions.
Just this week, the county has frozen all non-essential spending until further notice.
County Chief Clerk Amy Wilson said this is always done in mid-December to simplify the transition into the new year, but was moved up this year because of the impact the budget impasse has had on the county’s general fund cash flow.
