Monday is the beginning of National Disability Voter Registration Week and a local organization is raising awareness in our area.
Tom Franz, Deputy Director of the Disability Options Network based in New Castle, says “My Life, My Choice is the battle cry and there’s still much work to be done. That is part of the whole idea of Centers for Independent Living and it is the mission of Disability Options Network. We cover Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.”
The goal of this group is to empower people with disabilities to live as independently as they choose through skills training, transition services, referrals and advocacy.
Alan DeCristoforo is an Independent Living Coordinator who has taken an active role in making sure that polling places are accessible.
“We were here a couple weeks ago doing some polling place accessibility studies in some of the areas around Butler. Some of the polling places are not accessible. We really would like to see that change. Twenty percent of the population has a disability, you’re talking about one out of every five people.”
