A Butler County food bank will open its doors this weekend for those in the community either furloughed or working without a paycheck due to the government shutdown.
The St. Vincent de Paul food bank in the city of Butler is normally open weekday mornings, but organizers have decided to open on Saturday to accommodate local people affected by the shutdown- now in its 26th day.
“People aren’t getting paychecks,” Lew Czzowitz, the director of the St. Vincent de Paul food bank, said in an interview Wednesday. “We decided we needed to do something.”
Czzowitz said one of the volunteers of the food bank is affected by the shutdown- he’s working but not getting paid. Once the food bank organizers talked with him, they decided to take action.
Czzowtiz says the food bank is stocked with food for now, but the organization always welcomes donations.
Anyone affected by the shutdown and wanting to get a free meal should stop by the St. Vincent de Paul food bank at 157 Elm Street this Saturday, Jan. 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m.
