National Letter of Intent Day Wednesday appears to have been a successful one for the University of Pittsburgh and head coach Pat Narduzzi, who has just completed his first full year with the Panthers. Pitt signed 25 players yesterday, including several key recruits from western Pennsylvania. Pitt also signed players who previously had verbally committed to the likes of Southern California and Michigan.
Penn State and head coach James Franklin’s staff completed a 20-player class effort for 2016.
The two-time defensing Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion Slippery Rock University football team made a big splash Wednesday by signing 29 incoming student-athletes on National Signing Day. New head coach Shawn Lutz says it was one of the biggest signing days in the history of the program. Several of the potential players had Division I offers on the table, but chose The Rock. Of the 29 players signed, 20 are from Western Pennsylvania, including Butler senior Tim Vernick, who will join his older brother Bob to play linebacker at The Rock.
Logan Thimons of Freeport high school, has signed on to play linebacker at West Virginia.
The family off former Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler, who died of colon cancer last July at the age of 69, has been diagnosed with the CTE brain disease believed to be triggered by repetitive trauma to the brain. Stabler offered to have his brain studied after he passed.
