The recent shooting at a Florida nightclub has led to a local clergy member’s decision to address Butler City Council Thursday night.
Cantor Michal Gray-Schaffer, spiritual leader of Congregation B’nai Abraham in Butler, told our newsroom, “After the horrific tragedy of what happened in Orlando, I feel that I cannot be silent anymore and my being active in the groups that I am is good but for me personally, it’s not enough.”
Gray-Schaffer would like City Council to reconsider an ordinance proposed several years ago to eliminate discrimination against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Questioning community in Butler.
In addition to her direct short-term goal, Gray-Schaffer hopes that her statements have a larger reach.
“I want them to pass the ordinance against discrimination,” she said. “I hope it would open some people’s eyes to the fact that there are clergy people who really believe strongly in this issue.”
Although she may be the only speaker on this issue tonight, Gray-Schaffer expects many members of local faith-based LGBTQ support organizations in favor of this action to attend the meeting.
