Francisco Liriano pitched into the seventh inning and struck out 13 batters last night as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 last night before another near capacity crowd last night at PNC Park. Liriano allowed two earned runs on four hits and did not walk a batter. His record improved to 6-9. Outfielder Matt Joyce discovered he was in the starting line-up 15 minutes prior to game time, and hit a three-run home run in the first inning. He ended the night with four RBI’s. Joyce played for Starling Marte who felt ill prior to the game. Mark Melancon pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 28th save of the season after blowing two saves earlier in the week.
The Bucs picked up a half game on idle Chicago and are now 8-1/2 back in the National League Central. They host the Philadelphia Phillies for three games beginning tonight. Gerrit Cole will start the game this evening. First pitch is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm.
