Pipes were flushed and water fixtures changed over the long weekend inside Karns City School District buildings after elevated levels of lead and copper were found in the district’s water.
In a letter to parents on Friday, Superintendent Eric Ritzert said higher than acceptable levels of lead and copper were found Friday in all three district school buildings.
“We had 10 water samples tested in each of our school buildings,” Ritzert said in the letter. “We received results Friday, which showed elevated levels of lead and copper in a few of the samples. The action limit for lead is 0.015 mg/L and the action limit for copper is 1.3 mg/L.”
Ritzert said the water has been turned off where the elevated levels were found and bottled water has been made available for students and staff.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is a top priority,” Ritzert said.
Additional water quality tests have been ordered for all three buildings. School will continue to operate on a normal schedule and was in session on Tuesday.
