Several local lawmakers are among those who have signed and sent a letter to President Obama about the use of bathrooms in public schools by transgender students.
Representative Daryl Metcalfe was joined by 96 other state congress members including Brian Ellis, R. Lee James, Jim Marshall, and Tedd Nesbit.
The letter claims that an earlier letter sent by the Department of Education and the Department of Justice to public school districts last week is an “unconstitutional intrusion by the federal government.” The letter last week offered guidance about complying with this area of law under Title IX.
The response signed by the representatives claims that this issue has already been decided by court decisions and any changes should be decided by local school districts. The response also calls last week’s letter a “deliberate attempt to circumvent the Constitutional legislative process.”
According to a board member, Butler Area School District is not making any changes to their bathroom policies or facilities at this time.
