The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a weekend sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals following a 5-0 victory Sunday at PNC Park. Nick Kingham made his first major league start and took a perfect game into the seventh inning. He allowed just one hit and struck out nine. Catcher Elias Diaz had three hits and drove in two runs for the Bucs, who visit the Washington Nationals beginning tonight for three games. First pitch is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am will be 6:40pm. The Bucs enter the game with a five-game winning streak.
The Pirates placed reliever Enny Romero on the disabled list with a shoulder issue prior to the game. They are now 17-11 overall this season, and are 1/2-game in front of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.
The Cubs have won four games in a row.
The Slippery Rock University baseball team split a doubleheader with California Sunday, but have still taken over sole possession of first place in the PSAC-West with four games remaining. The Rock leads Mercyhurst by one game. The last time The Rock won a PSAC-West championship was 2003.
