With cold weather continuing and the lows in the next few days below freezing, keep the safety of your outdoor pets in mind…especially with their bedding.
Dr. Dennis Damion, from Suburban Animal Clinic in Butler, says you can use blankets but they need to be checked a lot more frequently. Cloth can freeze if it gets wet.
He says, “If you use a cloth material, you do have to be concerned with it getting wet from the moisture of the ground. Straw is good. But even with straw, be sure you are checking every 10 days to two weeks…making sure they have fresh bedding.”
It’s also a good idea to have an outdoor doghouse or shelter with a barrier underneath. Dr. Damion told WISR’s Dave Malarkey, “You can protect them by keeping them off of the ground. So, you want to get a barrier underneath them.” He suggests putting concrete or gravel down and then bedding on top of that so the moisture would seep through the gravel, or layer beneath the structure, and is kept away from the animal.
Also, ensuring healthy digestion for the pets could encourage them to live a long, happy life even in this cold weather. You may want to feed them properly on time and ensure they get all the nutrients on time. The cold weather can be hard on them as it is for humans. Investing in Nutra Thrive for Cats could be a viable option if your cat is suffering from digestion issues and other food-related problems. Else, you could reach out to your doctor and seek an opinion regarding it. Dogs mostly love cold weather but ensure that you feed them on time and not subject them to the temperature for a lengthier period.
