High School Sports:
The Karns City Girls Soccer team defeated Punxsutawney 3-2 last night to win their eighth straight District-9 title. It was the Gremlins fourth consecutive 2A championship. McKenna Martin had a hat trick to lead the Gremlins, who have now won 22 of the past 25 championships in girls soccer. Karns City will begin the PIAA tournament next week.
The Punxsutawney Boys topped Karns City 3-0 to win their first title since 2011.
The times have been set for this weekend’s WPIAL Girls Soccer championship matches. Mars (17-0-1) will face Plum (17-1-1) in the 3A title game at Highmark Stadium Saturday at noon.
In 2A: North Catholic (13-4) will face Yough (17-1-1) at 10am also at Highmark Stadium.
North Allegheny and Norwin meet in the 4A championship tonight at Highmark Stadium beginning at 6pm.
–The Freeport Girls Soccer team had their season end following a 4-1 loss to South Park in the WPIAL 2A consolation game.
WPIAL Girls Volleyball Playoffs:
–Two-time defending champion Knoch defeated Franklin Regional 3-0. The Knights improved to 17-0 this season and entered the tournament the top overall seed. They will meet the number two seed in 17-0 Thomas Jefferson in the 3A championship game Saturday at Fox Chapel high school. The match will begin at 4pm.
In Class 4A:
–North Allegheny defeated Moon 3-0. The Tigers will face Canon-McMillan Saturday in the title match at Fox Chapel high school beginning at 6pm. North Allegheny are the two-time defending champions.
–Pine-Richland lost to Canon-McMillan 3-2 in the other semifinal.
Tonight in the 2A semifinals:
–Freeport will meet Avonworth at 6pm. North Catholic will face Beaver at 7:30pm. Both matches are being played at North Allegheny high school.
