Out today (October 23rd) is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Pronounced Leh-nerd Skinnerd’ & ‘Second Helping’ – Live From Jacksonville At The Florida Theatre on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital formats. The collection, which was recorded earlier this year, features the band performing its first two studio albums, 1973’s Pronounced Leh-nerd Skinnerd and 1974’s Second Helping, live in their entirety for the first time, at two specially staged concerts at the Florida Theatre in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.
Frontman Johnnie Van Zant explained that saluting the legendary Florida Theatre played a key part in Skynyrd deciding to sign on for the project: “For me, to be able to do it there in Jacksonville, well, that was the key thing to this. I was like, when it was kinda presented to us and we talked about it and everything, I was like, we gotta do it in Jacksonville. Where someplace in Jacksonville that would be kinda cool, and I thought right away the Florida Theatre, because hell, that’s where Elvis played, it was the only place to play before we had an arena.”
- We asked Van Zant to give us an update on the band’s co-founding guitarist Gary Rossingtion, who’s back home recuperating after suffering a heart attack earlier this month: “Yeah, he’s doing good. Y’know, he had a slight heart attack, and y’know, he had a quadruple bypass — what was it five, six year ago, maybe — it might be even longer than that. And he was doing a procedure and they took him off of his plavix, which is blood thinner, and it caused him to have a blood clot — so basically gave him a small heart attack.”
- Van Zant told us that Rossington is readier than ever to get back out on the road with the band: “I talked to him the other day. We have a few shows left this year, and I was just like, ‘No, let’s just cancel them, get, y’know, your health straight and everything’ — and he was like, ‘No, no, no, no,’ he goes, ‘I been going out by my lake and doing a little bit of meditating and I was thinking what’s important to me, and that’s my family, my grandkids, and playing guitar.’ So he says: ‘If I can get all this right, I wanna finish up these shows this year.’”
