It’s that time of year when gardeners are getting ready to plant, but is now a good time to start?
Doug Oster, the Organic Gardener and Home and Garden Editor for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, says if the soil sticks to the shovel, it’s too wet. He says, however, that doesn’t have to prevent you from getting out there and starting your garden. He suggests using Oster compost on the bed and plant your seed.
Oster offered up some tips. He says you can plant two crops at the same time, like radishes and carrots. Plant them together and the radishes will come up first. The carrots will grow second. That way you can use one bed for two crops.
Another tip he gave is when it comes to tomatoes…stagger the time you plant them. Also, tomatoes love warmer temperatures and soil.
