The investigation into the Clinton Township secretary who was fired last year after allegedly stealing from the municipality has revealed even more money missing than originally thought.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Butler State Police, 52-year-old Margaret “Maggie” Nelson of Saxonburg was first charged in March of 2016 with various offenses including theft and fraud.
An audit of Clinton Township’s accounts found that Nelson allegedly wrote herself 40 checks during 2015 totaling over $130,000. She is also accused of using a township credit card to make over $600 in purchases.
Nelson allegedly admitted to police during three separate interviews that she entered misleading information in the township ledger and stole money from the township. Police say Nelson’s actions also violated the Public Official and Employee Ethics Act.
She is currently free on bail awaiting a hearing January 18th.
