October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Independence Health System is reminding women of the importance of annual mammograms.
Health officials recommend women over the age of 40 get their breast cancer screening once a year.
Lisa Moore is the director of the Women’s Imaging Center of Independence Health System.
“Mammogram is currently the most effective method of early detection,” Moore said. “If women are getting their mammogram done every year, we’re going to catch a change in their imaging very soon.”
Over the last 12 months, the hospital performed over 14,000 mammograms. This year alone, they’ve also conducted 417 biopsies, with 109 positive results.
