Two local sisters are behind an event this weekend to raise awareness of Huntington’s disease.
“It’s a genetic and degenerative brain disease that only affects about 30,000 people in the United States. It’s caused by the over production of the Huntington Protein in the brain. The overproduction causes a slow breakdown and deterioration of the brain. From diagnosis it takes about 15 to 20 years to kill its victim.”
Kiersten and Kierra Wood have organized the first annual Wood’s Warriors Bowl-for-a-Cure to be held Sunday (10/4) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Family Bowlaway Fun Center in Butler.
In addition to bowling, the event will also include a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, and bake sale.
The girls have a close personal stake in the fight against this disease.
“Our mother unfortunately has this disorder and it is genetic so Keirra and I have a 50-50 chance of inheriting it ourselves.”
All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
