A Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture program is celebrating a noteworthy anniversary this year.
The ‘Hunters Sharing the Harvest’ program helps 1.8 million people in Pennsylvania who need food assistance. The program processes excess venison from hunters and then distributes it to 5,000 local providers.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the program, as well as the millionth pound of donated venison.
Butler County is the second highest producing county in the state and a total of 27 organizations and agencies distribute the venison donated by area hunters.
Hunters interested in participating have four processors to choose from who participate in Butler County.
“All hunters have to do is fill out a receipt so that ‘Hunters Sharing the Harvest’ knows that it was donated,” Butler County coordinator Tom Rossman told our newsroom. “The processor then grinds the venison into burger and sends us a copy of the receipt. We then send them a fee for whatever their fee might be for processing it.”
This program is sustained by donations from businesses, other organizations and individuals.
