Hunters will head to the woods on Saturday for the opening of the state’s four-day firearms bear season.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission says black-bear hunters could set a new state record this year. The current record is 4,350 bears harvested in 2011.
Officials say Pennsylvania’s woods have maintained a bear population of around 20,000 over the past three years. Last year, bears were taken in 57 of the state’s 67 counties.
If you’re planning to bear hunt this weekend in Pennsylvania, you will need a general hunting license, as well as a bear license. Hunting licenses can be purchased online, but bear licenses contain harvest ear tags that are sent by mail. If you wait until the last minute, you’re advised to make a trip to an authorized licensing agent to get set up.
Hunters who harvest a bear during the four-day general season this weekend must take it to one of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s check stations within 24 hours.
Bear hunters must wear a minimum of 250 square inches of fluorescent orange material on the head, chest and back at all times.
