Rifle deer season is now in full swing.
Antlered deer can be taken now through Friday. Antlerless deer can be taken for one week beginning Saturday.
Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman Travis Lau says officials will begin compiling deer population figures once this year’s season is over.
“We compile that number at a local level by Wildlife Management Unit,” Lau said. “That’s done as part of our process of keeping tabs on the harvest.”
Lau said you may have noticed deer on Monday in places you normally don’t because the rush of opening day usually sends them scattering, but deer quickly return to their normal routine.
Last year, hunters harvested about 330,000 deer- about 150,000 bucks and 180,000 antlerless deer.
