With the hot temperatures, keep in mind pavement can really heat up and that can affect your dog’s paws.
According to the American Kennel Club, when it’s 85 degrees or higher, even a short outing can lead to a serious injury to your dog’s paws. Pavement, asphalt and artificial grass can become incredible hot, which could lead to blisters, especially for puppies.
Data in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates asphalt temps can register at 135 degrees with 86 degree air temperature.
How do you know if it’s too, hot? Test the walking surface with your own hand or barefoot. AKC’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Jerry Klein, DVM, who is an expert in vet emergencies and critical care says, “…place your hand comfortably on the pavement for 10seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.”
