The busiest travel day of Thanksgiving week used to be Wednesday, but now it’s Tuesday, as nearly 50 million Americans are expected to pack their bags and head out the door.
AAA expects over 48 million people to travel more than 50 miles for the holiday. And most of them will be driving- 89 percent. That means the roads will be the busiest they’ve been in 9 years.
In our region, an estimated 5 million motorists will hit the road, up about 2 percent from last year.
The busiest time on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be today between 3 and 8 p.m. and then again on Sunday between noon and 8 p.m. To accommodate the high volume, the turnpike has modified construction and maintenance work so that all lanes are open through late Sunday night.

As for how much drivers will pay to get to their destinations, according to GasBuddy.com, the average price of gas in the area is about $2.40. Nationally, it’s $2.11.
