National Letter of Intent day for prospective college football players is Wednesday. Last night, senior Central Catholic defensive back Damar Hamlin announced he will be signing with Pitt during a live broadcast on KDKA-TV. Hamlin is considered the top-rated cornerback in Pennsylvania and is ranked seventh in the nation by Rivals.com. He chose Pitt over Ohio State and Penn State, schools that were his finalists, but he had dozens of offers from other schools.
A story today by Mike White of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette features Mars high school senior John Costello, who has decided to focus on basketball in college and will pass up potential football scholarships when national letter of intent day arrives tomorrow. The main reason: fear of concussions in the future. Costello has been a two-sport stand-out at Mars, where he played tight end and defensive end for the football team. He also is currently a member of the boys basketball team that has built a 15-5 record, and has clinched a WPIAL playoff spot. Costello is averaging 17 points and 15 rebounds per game for the Planets, who are the WPIAL second-ranked team in Class Triple-A.
