Butler has the highest divorce rate of any city in Pennsylvania, according to USA Today.
The national paper recently published a report citing census bureau data and found the divorced population in the City of Butler was 20 percent, which was double the divorced population statewide.
Butler attorney Gerry Paulisick wasn’t surprised.
“It’s a little bit misleading. I don’t know that there are more people getting divorced in the City of Butler but rather the people that are residing here now…there’s a greater percentage of those that have been through that family transition,” Paulisick said in an interview.
She pointed to the demographics of the city, and the fact that there are a lot of apartments and transient housing, which means you’re going to get people who are in transition.
“And one of the biggest transitions is going through a divorce,” she said.
Paulisick has practiced law in Butler for two decades. Her firm focuses on divorce, custody and support. She believes the older you wait to get married, the better chance you have of it lasting.
“In Butler County, we see a lot of marriages for people who are under the age of 25. You think you’re in love but you haven’t really tackled the things that tend to be the biggest stressors in a marriage– like money, children and the impact of extended family. And then when you get to those, it’s a question of whether the marriage can survive it,” Paulisick said.
According to the American Psychological Association, about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce. The divorce rate among those who remarry is even higher.
