A famous rodent in a rural Pennsylvania town is set to determine our fate of a longer or shorter winter this morning.
It’s Groundhog Day and Punxatawney Phil is nestled in his burrow awaiting to make the big decision.
It’s a tradition that is attributed to a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its burrow, meaning there will be six more weeks of winter.
The holiday garners much fanfare in Punxatawney, with the ceremony being held at Gobbler’s Knob. It at times has had an attendance of 10,000. The first groundhog celebration for the day can be traced to the late 1800s.
