Governor Tom Wolf made a visit to our area to praise the construction of a new ethane cracker plant and the jobs that should come with it.
The cracker plant from Shell Chemicals in Beaver County will take local natural gas and turn it into materials to be used in plastics manufacturing.
At the peak of construction it could employ 6,000 people.
“The jobs are going to be day-in, day-out jobs that people who work them will need to live here,” Wolf said. “If we get this right, these will be jobs that stay here.”
The governor also said one of the things the state needs to do is make sure the environmental permitting process is made as seamless as possible.
“We’ve got to get things moving, not to compromise on the environment, but so we do things right and as quickly as we can,” he said.
The plant has drawn opposition from environmental groups who say it will harm air quality.
