October has arrived, which means a strike deadline is that much closer for the faculty of the State System of Higher Education.
The APSCUF union representing faculty at the 14 state-owned universities set an Oct. 19 date to strike if a deal can not be reached.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf says both sides need to do whatever it takes to avoid that walkout.
“There’s still a chance to get this reconciled,” Wolf said. “A strike would be a terrible thing for the students, faculty and the colleges. I don’t think anybody has an interest in a strike. We all have an interest in averting this.”
Wolf believes the many issues being addressed by both sides in the labor dispute may represent an important crossroads for higher education in the state. For now, the sides have just over two weeks to figure out which path they take, and whether or not the path includes a picket line.
