The Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania will close five of its nine camps in the region.
The camps Resting Waters, Singing Hills, Curry Creek, Elliott and Roy Weller are expected to close at the end of March. Four overnight camps will remain open, including Camps Redwing in Renfrew, Butler County. However, Camp Redwing will no longer offer resident camp programs but instead be available throughout the year for troops and service units for day camp, troop camping or weekend events.
Officials say after analyzing usage, revenue and expenses, it was determined it simply cost too much to maintain all of the camps compared to the money that was coming in.
The Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania say only 13 percent of its council’s members attend camp.
