Some people have turned to a generator to help them heat their homes during this extended power outage.
West Penn Power reminds people to always run the generator outside and far away from windows, doors and vents to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Residents should never connect a generator directly to household wiring without first installing a transfer switch. This prevents backfeeding, which could electrocute utility workers making repairs.
Use only extension cords that have a three-pronged plug and are rated for the intended load.
