After the first confirmed case in Pennsylvania, state game officials are stepping up their efforts to limit the spread of a disease in rabbits.
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease, or RHD, was recently detected in two captive rabbits at a facility in Fayette County.
The virus that causes this disease is very resilient and can make rabbits lethargic with no appetite before blood comes from their mouths or noses. The disease is spread in many ways with no treatment available but it does not pose any human health risk.
Anyone who finds two or more dead rabbits in the same location with no apparent cause of death is asked to contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission by phone or online.
