A cleaner, but more expensive, summer gas blend is on its way out…but not until next season.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that while the state Department of Environmental Protection says it won’t enforce the summer blend requirement this season while it waits for federal regulators to dissolve the rule officially, many fuel suppliers still will.
Suppliers say they are still likely to keep using the blend as long as the rule is on the books and there’s a chance that breaking it could bring federal fines or third-party lawsuits.
The summer gas blend has already been shipped to regional terminals to prepare for the seasonal switch, which is in effect from May 1 until Sept. 15 in Butler, Beaver, Allegheny, Armstrong, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.
