Free naloxone will be distributed this week at the Butler County State Health Center in Butler.
The giveaway of the opioid overdose reversal drug in Butler is part of a statewide initiative by Governor Tom Wolf to make the drug, more commonly known as Narcan, more readily available for those in need.
In all, nearly 80 locations across Pennsylvania will distribute the drug. In Butler County, Narcan will be given out on Thursday at the health center on Brugh Avenue.
Deputy Health Secretary Ray Barishansky says this is all part of the governor’s fight against the opioid epidemic.
“We really view this as a coordinated effort to get Naloxone out into the public,” he said.
Each person during the giveaway will receive one kit, which contains two doses. The free distribution day was specifically planned to be around the holidays, because it can be a difficult time period for those who have overdosed or know someone who has.
