A piece of Butler history will be torn down sometime over the next couple months.
According to Butler Mayor Tom Donaldson, the former Worsley’s Building on Main Street will be torn down.
“The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation and some other people were looking at trying to put a group together to salvage the building but financially it wasn’t going to work out,” Donaldson said. “At that point, Mrs. Worsley had to make a decision.”
According to Donaldson, a timetable for the demolition will take place over the next three to six weeks. The building was damaged as a result of a fire in mid-March.
The mayor says the money it would take to bring the old building into compliance with current city building codes would have made repairs very costly.
“To fix the building and then bring it up to code is where you will get into money that you don’t have to spend and probably will never recoup,” he said.
Work on asbestos removal is scheduled to take place before demolition on the structure would begin.
