Former Pittsburgh Penguin and two-time Stanley Cup champion Kevin Stevens stopped in Butler on Tuesday to share about his struggle with addiction and journey into recovery.
“Power Forward With Kevin Stevens” at the Butler Middle School was sponsored by the Butler Health System, Butler County, and the City of Butler Neighborhood Drug Watch.
“I can’t get anybody sober, but I can tell them my story and hopefully- by that- they can learn some stuff and make decisions so they don’t have to go through what I went through,” Stevens said to a crowd of about 100.
The 52-year-old talked about how his addiction to drugs ruined his career as a professional hockey player.
“In 20 years, I went from a first-team all star, winning Stanley Cups and having great friends and a great life, to having my door kicked in by the FBI,” he said.
He told the crowd he is not two years and four months sober.
While he was in town, Stevens also spent time bringing a message of hope to inmates at the Butler County Jail.
The Power Forward event included resource tables staffed by over 20 different local companies and organizations offering help to those in need.
