Former Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister was named the American League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers of America Tuesday. Banister led the Texas Rangers to 88 wins and the post-season after taking over a team that had lost 95 games the year before. He received 112 votes. Houston manager A.J. Hinch was the runner-up with 82 votes.
Chicago Cubs skipper Joe Maddon Tuesday was named the National League Manager of the Year. Maddon received a total of 124 points. St. Louis’ Mike Matheny placed second with 87 points. In 2015, Maddon guided the Cubs to 97 wins and a third place finish in the NL Central. It was the most victories ever for a Cubs first-year manager.
