As the conversation on school safety continues, some are wondering whether there will be any major changes to Butler County schools.
Not all districts in the county have metal detectors or armed guards- though some do. Former longtime local school superintendent Mike Panza said he’s sure that all county school superintendents are focused on improving security, even though that might look different depending on each district.
“School safety is always on everyone’s minds, whether you’re a superintendent, teacher, parent, student– doesn’t matter,” he said.
Panza believes all local superintendents are looking at how feasible metal detectors in their districts would be, but he warns that they won’t automatically solve all problems.
“There is a lot of other questions: who will monitor the detectors?; will you have detectors at each entrance?; who will ensure they’re working properly? There’s so many other things that go into the process,” he said.
Aside from district’s improving building security, he believes parents need to be actively involved in their child’s activities and that everyone inside a school should always be looking for suspicious things and reporting them immediately.
