A Butler County couple has pleaded guilty in federal court to an identity theft scheme carried out at several Walmart stores.
Robert MacVittie, 35, and Jennifer MacVittie, 32, formerly of Cranberry Township, each pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and aggravated identity theft.
Authorities say the couple used cell phone cameras to take pictures of checks that were being cashed by Walmart customers at service counters. The stolen information was later used to negotiate counterfeit checks. The couple’s scheme was played out between October 2013 and May 2014 at various Walmarts in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas and other states.
The couple will be sentenced in January.
