Heading out early for the long weekend?
AAA expects traffic to be heavy Thursday and Friday- especially in the late afternoon- as holiday travelers mix with commuters.
“You want to take some precautionary steps to try to avoid traffic,” AAA East Central spokesman Jim Garrity said. “Try to avoid driving in those ‘rush hour’ times. Leave earlier, or later.”
Gas prices aren’t cheap, but Garrity says that likely won’t stop people from taking a Memorial Day trip.
“Largely we see consumers find other ways to make up for that lost money in their vacation budget– maybe it’s taking one less trip out to a restaurant,” he said.
According to the annual AAA Memorial Day Travel Forecast, nearly 43 million Americans will start their summers with a Memorial Day weekend getaway.
This long holiday weekend, marking the unofficial start of summer travel season, will see the second-highest travel volume on record since AAA began tracking holiday travel volumes dating back to 2000.
Overall, an additional 1.5 million more people will take to the nation’s roads, rails and runways compared with last year, a 3.6 percent increase nationwide.
